Strummin’ Gym
An Interactive Environment for Learning Pop-Rock Strumming
Strummin’ Gym is an interactive learning environment designed to support the teaching and learning of pop-rock guitar strumming. The project starts from a common pedagogical issue: many guitar resources indicate which chords to play, but provide limited guidance on how those chords should be rhythmically performed.
As a result, beginner students often learn harmonic sequences without developing a clear understanding of pulse, meter, subdivision, accentuation, and gestural continuity. Strummin’ Gym addresses this gap by making the rhythmic and physical dimensions of accompaniment visible, audible, and directly controllable.
Why Strumming Matters
In pop-rock guitar practice, strumming is not a secondary gesture. It is the physical and rhythmic mechanism through which harmony becomes musical accompaniment. A chord progression only becomes meaningful in performance when it is organized through time, movement, accent, and sound.
For this reason, Strummin’ Gym focuses on the connection between listening, gesture, rhythm, and musical structure. The aim is not simply to reproduce fixed patterns, but to help students understand how strumming patterns are built, internalized, varied, and adapted to real songs.
A Unified Learning Space
Strummin’ Gym brings together tools and materials that are usually separated during music practice: metronome, rhythmic articulation, meter, strumming patterns, visual representation of the gesture, audio reference tracks, and AI-assisted suggestions.
This integration is central to the educational purpose of the project. Instead of moving between printed sheets, external metronomes, videos, audio players, and verbal explanations, students and teachers can work within a single environment whose structure remains constant and reproducible.
The platform is designed to reduce fragmentation and to make practice more accessible, especially when students need to continue working autonomously outside the lesson.
Practice Mode
Practice Mode is dedicated to the progressive internalization of essential strumming patterns. The user starts from the pulse, explores different articulations, selects the meter, and then works on strumming patterns through a visual and auditory representation of the gesture.
The system highlights a fundamental aspect of strumming: the arm does not stop when a stroke is silent. Silent gestures are part of the rhythmic flow, because they preserve continuity, timing, and physical stability. Strummin’ Gym therefore helps users distinguish between gestures that produce sound and gestures that remain silent while still contributing to the overall movement.
Song Mode
Song Mode connects the learning process to real musical material. Users can load a reference track, listen to it, estimate or adjust the BPM, define a synchronization point, and practice the selected strumming pattern along with the song.
This mode reflects a common learning situation: a student wants to accompany a specific song, but the available chord chart does not explain how the rhythm should be played. Strummin’ Gym helps bridge the gap between the song as an audio reference and the strumming gesture required to perform it.
The Role of Artificial Intelligence
In Song Mode, Strummin’ Gym can analyze the selected audio track and suggest a possible strumming pattern and BPM. The AI component is not intended to replace musical judgment or the role of the teacher. Instead, it provides a starting point for listening, comparison, correction, and discussion.
The user remains in control of the system: AI suggestions can be displayed, applied, modified, or ignored. This is an important design principle of the project. Artificial intelligence is used as a pedagogical cue, not as an unquestionable authority.
For Students and Teachers
Strummin’ Gym is designed for both autonomous practice and guided teaching. For students, it provides a structured environment in which rhythmic accompaniment can be explored step by step. For teachers, it offers a visual and interactive support for explaining concepts that are often difficult to communicate verbally, such as subdivision, continuity of movement, and the relationship between meter and pattern.
The project is especially oriented toward educational contexts in which technology can support musical understanding without replacing embodied practice.
Research Perspective
Strummin’ Gym is also part of a broader research path on music education, interaction, and digital learning environments. The platform will be used to investigate how learners interact with visual, auditory, and AI-assisted tools for rhythmic practice, and how these tools can support the development of musical autonomy.
Future validation activities will focus on the usability of the platform, the clarity of its learning workflow, and its potential contribution to the teaching and learning of guitar accompaniment.

Strummin’ Gym is currently under development. Access to the platform may be provided in the context of guided demonstrations, educational activities, or research validation studies.
